Why LCA?

Our Students Love Learning

Classical education was best summed up by Plato, when he wrote, the goal of education is to teach us to love what is beautiful.” At LCA, we relentlessly pursue this ideal by showing our students beautiful things and encouraging our students to care deeply about them, whether those things be ingenious mathematical proofs, gorgeous verses of poetry, subtle grammatical techniques, remarkable living organisms, or breathtaking musical movements. Students and teachers at LCA are united by their common passion for every subject.

LCA IS LOUISVILLE’S only Secular CLASSICAL school

The classics can be read and discussed by anyone, and LCA welcomes students of all faiths and philosophies. Our curriculum develops mutual respect, fosters unique friendships and community, and enriches our exploration of the world. The kindness, respect, and openness to varying thoughts and beliefs that LCA cultivates makes it a place that is inherently friendly to all students.

OUR Faculty is well-qualified and exceptional

LCA teachers are well educated in their fields of study and committed to our classical approach. Nearly all of our faculty have advanced degrees. The experience in and enthusiasm for their areas of expertise coupled with a passion for teaching translates into a love of learning in our students. Kindness, patience, and courtesy are truly honored. Our teachers’ goal for each student is self-confidence tempered by the humility that should result from an encounter with the great thinkers whose works we study. Visit our faculty page to learn more about our teachers.

Classes are small

By design, LCA classes are seminar-style and small in size, facilitating a spirit of cooperation, collaboration, and thoughtful conversation. Our current student to teacher ratio is 8:1, allowing teachers to provide the one-on-one attention students need. We cap classes at 15 students each. Partly because of what we can accomplish with our small size, LCA students have gained distinctions in the National Merit Scholar Program, the Kentucky Governor’s Scholar Program, the Governor’s Cup competitions, the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition, and the national Scholastic Kids reporting program.

Movement is a must

You will find few, if any, schools in Louisville that offer as much recess time as LCA. Students in all grades are provided the recess time their brains and bodies need. Mens sana in corpore sano is a Latin phrase meaning “a healthy mind in a healthy body” and has long been the classical ideal. We believe whole-heartedly that moving their bodies through recess and physical exercise is critical to children’s and adolescents’ social, emotional, and intellectual development.

The Arts Are Part of our core curriculum

We esteem music and art as an integral part, not periphery, of our daily curriculum. All students participate in the school choir and additionally are also enrolled in weekly instrumental music classes. Our student leadership club, Aurum Chorum, is directly affiliated with the choir. Further, all students take art classes twice per week, developing fundamental understanding of form and design and building foundational skills of drawing, composition, color, and perspective. Each term students focus on a particular genre or form of art, including, photography, printmaking, drawing, and painting.

we are committed to keeping Tuition affordable for all families

Annual tuition is significantly less than many other independent, five-day private schools in the city. Louisville Classical Academy makes a great effort to keep tuition as affordable as possible so that any family can receive an outstanding classical education. Further, as part of our non-profit mission, we are committed to giving scholarships solely on the basis of need, with approximately 50% of our students receiving financial aid and an average package covering approximately half of tuition.
